10 politicians-filmmakers

Art and politics are things that, although they exist in parallel, sometimes still intersect.

This can happen both in the general cultural space and in a single piece of art.

It happens that politics and art intersect in the fate of an individual, as has happened with many famous people.

Clint Eastwood

In 1986, he became the mayor of one of the small California towns of Carmel-by-the-Sea. However, the movie captivates him more, and Clint returns to Hollywood. He makes many popular films, including such masterpieces as the Oscar-winning “Unforgiven” and “Million Dollar Baby.”

But Eastwood’s political ambitions still make themselves felt: since 2001, the director has served as vice-chairman of the California state commission involved in the creation of recreational zones.

Jon Gnarr

Icelandic comic actor and screenwriter who has starred in various television shows and films (our audience may know him from the film “Mr. Björnfredarson” (2009).

He gained quite a lot of popularity in his homeland even before he decided to create the “Best Party” in 2009. Gnarr transferred his comic talents to politics: his party promised to honestly not fulfill election promises, to be openly corrupt, and to provide free towels in swimming pools and a polar bear in the zoo. Surprisingly, the “Best Party” won the municipal council elections, and Jon Gnarr became mayor of Reykjavik.

In his political activities, Gnarr combines the serious with the comic. The whole world became aware of the case when the mayor opened the gay pride parade, dressing up in a woman’s dress and declaring that, “unfortunately, the mayor himself could not come.” The film “Gnarr” by Galcur Olfarson tells in detail about the election race and political career.

Ronald Reagan

Prominent politician, 40th President of the United States. Reagan began his career as an actor. He starred in 54 films and was even elected president of the US Film Actors Guild.

Reagan’s films were not very successful, because most of them were low-budget films that, as Reagan joked, “the producers weren’t trying to make them good – they were trying to make them by Thursday.” The most notable among them was the film King’s Row (1942), which was nominated for an Oscar. Reagan’s performance in this film was condemned by many critics, but overall it became one of his best roles.

Bogdan Benyuk

In 2013, MP Bohdan Benyuk took a leave of absence from the Verkhovna Rada to star in Otar Shamatava’s film “Ursus”. This is one of the most expensive film projects in modern Ukraine.

The actor plays the old stuntman Thomas, who accompanies the bear on a long journey. Surely, while working with a predator on the set, Benyuk’s experience of communicating with no less “wild animals” sitting in VR came in handy.

The adventurous road movie “Ursus” will take the viewer to the early 90s. The plot tells about an actor who traveled from Tbilisi to Berlin, dressed as a bear. During the adventure-filled trip, he is accompanied by the aforementioned stuntman and animal rights activist. Now this film project is frozen. It is not known when the film will be released.

Vaclav Havel

The last President of Czechoslovakia (1989 – 1992) and the first President of the Czech Republic (1993-2003). Václav Havel was born into a family that owned the Lucernafilm film studio and the famous Barrandov film studio, and therefore he dreamed of cinema since childhood. However, fate decreed that Havel was a politician and playwright all his life, but he came to realize his dream only shortly before his death.

His first and last film was Leaving (2011), which premiered a few months before Havel’s death. The film is based on the play by Havel himself, and his wife played the main role. The film tells a dramatic story about how difficult it is for a high-ranking politician to give up his usual privileges when leaving his post.

Cicciolina

Italian-Hungarian porn actress, the first hardcore porn film star to become a member of parliament. Anna Ilona Staller (this is the actress’s real name) began acting in sex films for adults in 1975, and her first hardcore film was released in 1985. At the same time, Ilona was actively involved in politics: in 1979 she was elected as the leading candidate of the Green Party, and already in 1987 she successfully ran for a seat in the Italian parliament.

Cicciolina advocates for human rights and relief for starving people around the world, fights the spread of nuclear energy, and also defends sexual freedom. In 1991, she even created the “Love Party”. Cicciolina’s most famous statement was her offer to make love in exchange for ending the war, first to Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and then to terrorist Osama Bin Laden. “My breasts did not harm anyone, while Bin Laden’s war brought thousands of victims,” said the former porn star with expressive breasts.

Fred Dalton Thompson

American lawyer, film actor and politician who made his debut in the film “Marie” (1985), playing himself. In subsequent years, Thompson starred in films such as Die Hard 2 (1990), Cape Fear (1991), Curly Sue (1991) and many others. One of his most famous roles was the television series Law and Order, in which the actor began appearing in 2002.

At the same time, he built a political career, working as an adviser in the Senate, and in 1994 he even took the seat of a Tennessee state senator. In 2007, Thompson tried to run for president, but did not receive much support and was forced to withdraw his candidacy.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

In 2003, Schwarzenegger decided to run for governor of California as a Republican, and unexpectedly won, becoming the state’s second governor born outside the United States.

During the election race, the media dubbed Schwarzenegger “The Governor,” and also made full use of headlines like “Terminator 4: Rise of the Candidate.”

Shirley Temple

American actress, best known to audiences for her childhood roles in the 1930s. During the Great Depression, she became a real star: her fees were fabulous, and the crowd of fans was innumerable. The name Shirley Temple has always been associated with phenomenal success. Her portraits were printed on any souvenir products, and dolls named Shirley and gramophone records with recordings of songs were immediately swept off the shelves.

Little Shirley became the youngest person in the history of cinema and even received a youth Oscar in 1934. However, the little girl soon grew up, and her future acting career was less successful. Therefore, in the 60s, Temple became involved in political activities, became a member of the Republican Party and helped Richard Nixon take the presidency.

Subsequently, Shirley Temple became a delegate to the UN Assembly, and as an ambassador she visited Ghana and Czechoslovakia. Temple even received a medal of honor for her political activities.

Mikhail Evdokimov

Variety artist, comedian and film actor, who starred in such famous films as “I Don’t Want to Get Married” (1993), “Should We Send a Messenger” (1998), “Old Nags” (2000) and others. In addition to his roles in films, Evdokimov also became famous for his parodies of famous artists, his own television programs and the performance of songs.

Evdokimov’s desire to try his hand at the political field arose back in 1995, when he ran for the State Duma. He made several attempts to occupy different positions until in 2004 he became the governor of the Altai Territory.

This success was facilitated by the image of a simple, honest man from the people, and the slogan of his PR campaign was the slogan “Jokes aside!” The media unanimously dubbed Evdokimov’s victory “Schwarzenegger syndrome.”
