The American magazine Esquire compiled a rating of 40 films that showed the best sex in cinema. The leader was the 2019 French historical drama Portrait of a Portrait of the Lady on Fire, starring Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel. The film received a prize for best screenplay at Cannes and a “queer palm”.
The film is set in 1760s France and centers around a young artist hired by a wealthy woman to paint a portrait of her daughter. Later, a love affair arises between the artist and her employer.
Second place went to the 2007 film Atonement with Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. The film was directed by Joe Wright based on the novel of the same name by Ian McEwan and takes place during the Second World War.
In third place is the 2017 horror film “The Nanny,” starring Judah Lewis and Samara Weaving, which tells the story of a child who is madly in love with his nanny.
Rounding out the top five are “Jennifer’s Body” with Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, as well as the sports drama “Durham Bulls” with Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon.
