Lately, LGBT films have been moving closer to mainstream status. In addition, they confidently collect awards at famous film festivals and achieve commercial success. But it was not always so.
Interest in queer culture began to grow only in the 90s of the last century thanks to the New Queer Cinema movement. A boom like this will likely never happen again. Nevertheless, the level of such films is becoming higher and higher every year.
Carol (2015)
The film takes place in New York in the fifties of the 20th century. The young heroine Teresa works as a saleswoman in one of the large stores in Manhattan. There she meets Carol, a sophisticated and seductive female customer. The first spark that runs between women will be followed by a deeper feeling. They will soon face a choice between social conventions and mutual attraction.
All About My Mother (1999)
The main character Manuela is a nurse who lives in Madrid with her son Esteban. She’s a classic single mother. The boy never knew his father. One day a misfortune happened – Esteban died in a car accident. Manuela read her son’s diary, from where she learned that the boy really wanted to see his dad.
The mother understands that she must go to Barcelona – that is where Lola lives, a transvestite who was once Manuela’s boyfriend, and it was from him that she gave birth to Esteban.
The Kids Are Alright (2010)
Nick and Jules have been living together for a long time. The happy lesbian couple has two children: fifteen-year-old Lazarus and eighteen-year-old Johnny. The two children were conceived from the same anonymous donor.
The only guy in the family lacks male companionship. And he asks his sister to find her biological father. The children are happy to meet their father. But soon the bright feelings are replaced by disappointment, because the found father falls in love with one of the mothers.
Single Man (2009)

The Handmaiden (2016)
The film is about the events of the 1930s that took place in Korea during the occupation. A new maid is hired to work for a wealthy Japanese woman who leads a secluded life in a large country house. A quiet and meek-looking girl of pleasant appearance.
But in reality she is a thief who works in tandem with a conman posing as an aristocrat. The plan is carefully thought out, and at first events go as well as possible – but only until the maid begins to understand her mistress better.
Tangerine (2015)
The film takes place in Los Angeles. The plot centers on two transgender prostitutes – Sin-Di and Alexandra. Sin-Di has just been released from prison and learns from Alexandra that her boyfriend, who is also their pimp, is cheating on her with an ordinary woman.
Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013)
The film tells the story of the first love of a fifteen-year-old high school student, Adele, who meets the artist Emma. Thus begins a love story between two women, which develops over the course of five years.
Throughout the film, their love goes through all stages – from unexpected falling in love to inevitable separation. Candid scenes of lesbian love struck with their frankness and sincerity.
Moonlight (2016)
The picture tells about a young man named Chiron. The film is divided into three chapters, each of which is dedicated to a separate episode from his life. The action takes place in the 80s, in Miami, when President Reagan carried out a large-scale anti-drug campaign. The film is dedicated to the boy’s growing up, his first love and unconventional sexual experience.
Call Me by Your Name (2017)
