Lately, LGBT films have been moving closer to mainstream status. In addition, they confidently collect awards at famous film festivals and achieve commercial success. But it was not always so.

Interest in queer culture began to grow only in the 90s of the last century thanks to the New Queer Cinema movement. A boom like this will likely never happen again. Nevertheless, the level of such films is becoming higher and higher every year.

Carol (2015)

The film takes place in New York in the fifties of the 20th century. The young heroine Teresa works as a saleswoman in one of the large stores in Manhattan. There she meets Carol, a sophisticated and seductive female customer. The first spark that runs between women will be followed by a deeper feeling. All About My Mother (1999)

The main character Manuela is a nurse who lives in Madrid with her son Esteban. She’s a classic single mother. The boy never knew his father. One day a misfortune happened – Esteban died in a car accident. Manuela read her son’s diary, from where she learned that the boy really wanted to see his dad.

The mother understands that she must go to Barcelona – that is where Lola lives, a transvestite who was once Manuela’s boyfriend, and it was from him that she gave birth to Esteban.

The Kids Are Alright (2010)

Nick and Jules have been living together for a long time. The happy lesbian couple has two children: fifteen-year-old Lazarus and eighteen-year-old Johnny. The two children were conceived from the same anonymous donor.
