10 Ukrainian directors who starred in foreign films

“It is difficult for a director to be an actor: having been a soloist, he does not play well in an orchestra,” said Fanny Ardan.

We selected ten domestic filmmakers who “played in the orchestra” quite well.

Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi

2014 was, perhaps, the most intense in Slaboshpytskyi’s work. Having released his silent masterpiece “Tribe” in a triumphal march through world festivals, the director simultaneously starred in Alyona Demyanenko’s film “My Grandmother Fanny Kaplan”. He played Lenin’s younger brother – Dmytro.

Mykhailo Illenko

Mykhailo Illenko got his first experience of working in big cinema back in the 60s, appearing as an actor. And one of his last roles can be seen in the episode of Valentyn Vasyanovych’s comedy “Ordinary Business”. Illenko plays a patient of a psychiatric hospital who is sure that he must turn off and on the light in the room 300 times, otherwise the end of the world will come.

Taras Tkachenko

Acting works of Tkachenko are extremely rare. His most vivid appearance on the screens was Volodymyr Tykhi’s film “Green Jacket” (2013). He played the father of the main character, who is trying to find a common language with his daughter, while she is going through not the best period in her life.

Alan Badoev

Even in the tight creative schedule of this, the most prolific Ukrainian clip maker, there was time for a role in the movie. In Evgeny Matvienko’s rom-com “Alone under contract” (2014), Badoev plays himself – a busy director on the set of another music video.

Akhtem Seitablaev

Seytablayev’s acting and directing career in feature films actually began with one film – “Mama” (2003). Since then, he regularly shoots his pictures, and also appears in the tapes of other filmmakers. His last role to date is in Oleksiy Shaparev’s TV series “The Guard”, which is scheduled to premiere in the coming months.

Anna Yarovenko

As a director, Yarovenko shot about 20 films. However, she played a major acting role in a full-length feature film only once. In 2008, Ihor Podolchak’s psychedelic film “Las Meninas” was released, in which Anna played one of the main roles.

Maxim Stetskov

In April, Stetskov’s debut feature film “Deadly Alive” should be released. In parallel with the work on this picture, the young filmmaker starred in Volodymyr Lert’s film “Polonyanka” (2013) and Dmytro Laktionov’s TV series “Charlie” (2014).

Oleg Fialko

In one of the episodes of Kira Muratova’s painful masterpiece “Melody for accordion” (2009), Fialko’s conversation on a mobile phone is shown. Explaining something loudly to someone, he merges with the polyphonic chorus of people around him, who also do not understand what they are talking about on their mobile phones. This is how Kira Georgievna sees our world – there are many ways to talk to each other, but we have not become better at hearing each other.

Anatoly Mateshko

Despite the fact that over the past 16 years, Mateshko has released about 30 directorial works – sometimes he also manages to film for his colleagues. True, this happens rarely – once every few years. And his roles are usually quite small. Although episodic, he appears very vividly in Leonid Boyk and Vyacheslav Kryshtofovych’s thriller “The Dead Man’s Friend” (1997). In this picture, he played a vile man who bribes a witness.

Serhiy Gorny

Recently, there have been screenings of the “Modern Ukrainian Cinema” program, in which Gorny’s short film “The Big Break” is shown. The author of this tape also played in Philip Sotnychenko’s film “Hugs”.
