Matthew McConaughey is one of the actors whose creative development is particularly noticeable. Starting with the roles of sexy handsome men, he was able to become the strongest artist who chooses bold and non-standard roles from the best directors.
At first, it may seem that this is a typical lover hero of romantic comedies, such as “Wedding Pandemonium”, “Love and Other Troubles”, “How to Get Rid of a Boyfriend in 10 Days”. But we should not forget about the excellent early career of the actor with Linklater and Sayles, and later with Spielberg, Zemeckis and Schumacher.
In order to fully appreciate the actor’s talent, we suggest recalling the most memorable and iconic images for the audience.
True Detective (2014)
It is impossible to leave out the role of Rust Cole in the TV series “True Detective” from the actor’s filmography. Thanks to the main characters played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the film was able to raise the level of production of quality series.
The picture presents viewers with two storylines. The story begins in 1985 during the investigation of the murder of Dora Kelly by police officers Cole and Hart. A similar murder takes place 15 years later, when the detectives managed to spoil their relationship and many unpleasant secrets appeared.
For McConaughey, the role of Cole is considered the best in his film career. The actor deliberately chose this character for himself because he wanted to appear on the screen as a philosophizing detective who feels the pain and injustice of the world.
Interstellar (2014)
On Earth, the soil ceases to bear fruit, oxygen runs out, the air is full of dust, and it becomes impossible to live. McConaughey plays the role of pilot Cooper, who had to lead an expedition in search of a habitable planet. He understands the hopelessness of this venture, but still uses even the smallest opportunity to give the children a chance to survive.
The film is not only about space and the search for life in it. It is about a family, about children who live on a dying planet while their eternally young parents try to find a way to survive due to temporary fluctuations.
Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
Based on real events, the film tells the story of Ron Woodruff, who until a certain point lived a carefree cowboy life, filled with alcohol and women. But at one point everything changed – he was diagnosed with cancer. For 1985, this was equivalent to a death sentence. Doctors promised the cowboy only a month to live, but Ron did not despair, but began to search for drugs that could help him. As a result, he waged a war with death for 7 years.
McConaughey was able to convey the suffering and joy of the hero, his laughter and tears. The impressive external transformation and the power with which the actor played this complex role ensured the success of the film and brought the Golden Globe and the Oscar in the Best Actor category.
Gentlemen (2019)

A wonderful cast consisting of Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant and other movie stars, interesting dialogues and storylines are a characteristic set of qualities of films by Guy Ritchie.
High and Confused (1993)
Many people probably know McConaughey’s phrase: “Alright, alright, alright”, but not everyone knows that it is one of the iconic phrases of the film about American teenagers. For 23-year-old Matthew, it was the first role in a full-length film after filming only in commercials. At first, the role was episodic for the actor. But the director was so impressed by the work of McConaughey in the role of Richard Linklater that in the end several scenes with him were added to this teenage film.
A Time to Kill (1996)
Matthew McConaughey plays the role of lawyer Jake Brigens, who has to figure out who is more to blame: the killers of a black girl or her father, who took revenge for his daughter. The role of a lawyer was not easy, but Matthew coped with it perfectly. This film helped the actor become a star of the first magnitude at only 27 years old.
Many years later, the experience of this shooting came in handy for McConaughey in the movie “Lincoln for a Lawyer”.
Contact (1997)
A science fiction film with a philosophical background. The charismatic actor got the role of the priest Palmer Jose, who had to face off against the astronomer Ellie Arroway. The scientist recorded a signal offering a meeting from an extraterrestrial civilization and decides to go into the unknown. The priest and the agnostic will try to come to an agreement on their fundamentally different positions through long discussions.
Mud (2013)
Two teenage friends live an unremarkable life: they work, go out, are interested in the opposite sex, and dream. During one of the walks, the boys found a boat with a mysterious stranger, Mad.
McConaughey does not play the main role in the film, but his character fascinates with his romance, faith in the future and in love.
The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)
Mickey Holler, a successful lawyer, has nothing more to wish for in life: he does his favorite job, drives his favorite car, has a great family and finds time to rest his soul. His usual life is disturbed by Louis Roulet. An influential client asks a lawyer to win his case, which does not seem so difficult. But the deeper Holler tries to get into his investigation, the more he sees his client’s double game. The matter now becomes not only serious, but also life-threatening.
Amistad (1997)
Another lawyer role for Matthew McConaughey, this time in a Steven Spielberg film. The picture is based on the real events of the capture of the ship “Amistad” by African slaves. Caught and put on trial, they still managed to raise many issues about human rights. Roger Baldwin is a fighter against racism, deeply convinced of the triumph of justice and truth.
Although the film is not one of the brightest in the career of the actor, it still occupies a worthy place in his filmography thanks to the high evaluation of the audience and film critics.
