Mykolaiv is one of the most interesting cities in southern Ukraine, known for its rich history closely connected with the sea and shipbuilding. The city was founded in the eighteenth century as a major shipbuilding center and a base of the Black Sea Fleet, which is why many of its landmarks are related to maritime history. Today Mykolaiv attracts travelers with its cozy embankments, historic buildings, museums, and picturesque parks.

Flotsky Boulevard
Flotsky Boulevard is one of the most picturesque embankments in the city, located along the Ingul River. In its atmosphere and layout it resembles the famous Primorsky Boulevard in Odesa, the city known for its humor and vibrant maritime culture. This place is perfect for walking and relaxing outdoors. Visitors can enjoy not only peaceful strolls but also admire interesting monuments, including a monument to Mykhailo Faleev and an old cannon. The boulevard offers beautiful views of the river, bridges, and the green alleys of the park called “Victory.”
Cathedral of the Kasperov Icon of the Mother of God
This majestic church impresses visitors with its architecture built in the Old Russian style. Graceful lines and decorative elements make it one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the city. The main shrine of the cathedral is the Kasperov Icon of the Mother of God, which was once especially revered in the Tavria province. During the Soviet period the building was used for other purposes and served as a club for a factory. Only in 1992 did the church reopen its doors to believers and regain its spiritual role.
Mykolaiv Regional Art Museum
At the Vereshchagin Art Museum visitors can explore an impressive collection of artworks that includes more than nine thousand exhibits. The center of the collection consists of works by the famous painter Vasily Vereshchagin, who was one of the initiators of creating a club of fine arts enthusiasts in the city.
In addition to his paintings, visitors can also see works by well-known artists such as Bryullov, Serov, and Venetsianov. The museum building itself also deserves attention because its architecture is elegant and harmonious.
Headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet
This historic building is one of the significant landmarks of Mykolaiv and attracts tourists from many parts of the world. It was built in 1794 in the style of russian classicism. In 1978 a museum of the fleet and shipbuilding was opened in the building. The exhibition includes an impressive collection of ship models from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Among the exhibits visitors can see models of gun frigates, armored ships, and other types of naval military equipment. In front of the headquarters there is a picturesque alley dedicated to famous naval commanders.
Children’s Town “Skazka”
A visit to the children’s park “Skazka” takes guests into a real world of fantasy that is often compared to a Ukrainian “Disneyland.” Every structure within the park is dedicated to a well-known fairy tale or its main character. Here children and adults can meet favorite cartoon characters, see a fairy-tale stone castle, a sailing ship, a real train, and a colorful carousel with characters from the works of Alexander Pushkin such as the cat and the mermaid. Families with children especially enjoy this place because of its joyful and magical atmosphere.
Admiralty
The Admiralty is a historic complex of buildings belonging to the naval department that was built in 1788. Unfortunately, only part of the original structures has survived to the present day. Today visitors can see the central administrative building of the shipbuilding plant, which is crowned with a tall spire. This architectural landmark forms the heart of the square located at the intersection of Sadova Street and Admiralska Street.
Museum of Shipbuilding and the Fleet
This museum is worth visiting even for those who have never been particularly interested in shipbuilding before. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that there is almost no other museum like it in Ukraine. In the nineteenth century the building where the museum is located served as the office of the commanders of the Black Sea Fleet. Today it houses a large exhibition dedicated to the history of navigation from the times of Kyivan Rus to the present day. The museum’s collection contains about three thousand exhibits, including more than one hundred items that were raised from the bottom of the Black Sea and rivers. These include parts of ships, their components, and other fascinating artifacts.
St. Nicholas Church
The stone St. Nicholas Church was built in 1813, and its architectural appearance has been well preserved to this day. The building is designed in the classical style and painted in bright blue tones that make it especially noticeable. Inside visitors can see beautiful nineteenth-century frescoes and a bell tower with functioning bells. Guests can bless water, admire the magnificent altar dedicated to the Protection of the Holy Mother of God, and experience the unique spiritual atmosphere of the church.
Sculpture of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker
In the picturesque Kashtanovy Square a sculpture dedicated to the patron saint of Mykolaiv and all sailors — Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker — was installed relatively recently. The monument is made of bluish-gray marble and was created with donations from local residents. The place has become a popular location for walks among both locals and visitors. People enjoy spending time here while admiring the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful surroundings.
Ancient Settlement “Wild Garden”
The “Wild Garden” is a unique archaeological site that represents the ruins of a Cimmerian settlement dating back to the twelfth century before our era. It is believed that the settlement existed during the time of Troy, long before the appearance of the ancient Greek colony of Olbia. The first archaeological discovery made here was a bronze cauldron. Later researchers found fragments of ceramics, tools, and animal skeletons. Many of these artifacts can now be seen in the local history museum of Mykolaiv.
Old Fleet Barracks
The Old Fleet Barracks are part of the Admiralty complex. They were built in 1850 in the classical architectural style to house sailors of the naval crew. Each building was able to accommodate up to two thousand people. In 1913 a local history museum was opened in these premises. Today its collection contains more than 160,000 rare items and archaeological discoveries.
Yacht Club
The Mykolaiv Yacht Club is located on the picturesque Southern Bug River and is considered the oldest institution of this kind in Ukraine. It was founded in 1887 in the coastal part of the city. The building of the club, designed by the city architect L. Rode, has been preserved in excellent condition and remains an important part of the architectural heritage of Mykolaiv.
Catholic Church of Saint Joseph
The Catholic Church of Saint Joseph was built in 1896 with donations from the local Catholic community. In 1934 the church was closed by representatives of the Bolshevik authorities. Religious services resumed only in 1992. Later an organ was installed in the church, and organ music concerts began to be held there. Around the building visitors can also see a unique collection of stone statues that adds a special atmosphere to this place.
