Today, May 20, marks the 108th anniversary of the birth of legendary actor James Stewart. In this regard, experts from the British Film Institute compiled a list of the 10 main films in his career.
“The cowboys, cops, pilots, losers, fathers, musicians and clowns he portrayed on screen were often consumed by guilt, obsession, repressed emotions or self-doubt. But no matter how hard directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Anthony Mann tried to subordinate Stewart’s noble idealism to their design, audiences never ceased to admire the actor,” the rating’s compilers write.
“Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” (1939) Frank Capra
“The Corner Shop” (1940) Ernst Lubitsch
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) Frank Capra
“Harvey” (1950) Henry Coster
“A Bend in the River” (1951) Anthony Mann
The Naked Spur (1953) Anthony Mann
Opposite Window (1954) Alfred Hitchcock
Vertigo (1958) Alfred Hitchcock
Anatomy of a Murder (1959) Otto Preminger
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) John Ford
