Japanese anime reigns. In Japan

Blumhouse comedy-horror Freaky did not even break the modest barrier of 5 million opening at the domestic box office this weekend, earning 3.7 million doll from 2,472 screens. It still was No. 1, but, despite a very strong marketing campaign, earned much less than many insiders had expected. Strong social media presence for the film and “thematic” Friday the 13th release did not help either “thanks” to a new wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the States. By the sharp contrast, Japanese anime Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train made $17,154,581 last weekend and by now might reach $200 million. At least somewhere the box office is still alive.
