All the Money in the World

The Getty family stands out noticeably among other dynasties. They live in luxury, lack nothing, and get everything life has to offer. All these privileges became possible thanks to Jean Paul Getty — a man who was once the richest in the world and built a powerful economic empire.

His unimaginable wealth was known even in the farthest corners of the world, and this fame reached those who saw such financial disparity as unjust. As a result, a bold gang of criminals decided to kidnap the oil tycoon’s grandson, demanding 17 million dollars for his release. However, the steadfast millionaire refused to meet the kidnappers’ demands, effectively putting his relative under real threat of death.

The film All the Money in the World, directed by Ridley Scott, is based on true events that took place in 1973. Yet the film’s production was not without scandal. Initially, the main role was played by Kevin Spacey, but after accusations of sexual misconduct, the director had to urgently reshoot all scenes with a new actor — Christopher Plummer. For Plummer, this unexpected turn led to a nomination for the film industry’s highest award — the Oscar in 2018.

The movie recreates real events that occurred in 1973. From 1957 to 1976, Jean Paul Getty topped the list of the world’s wealthiest individuals. It was during this time that his grandson, John Paul Getty III — who lived a bohemian lifestyle in Rome — was kidnapped. For five months, the elder Getty refused to pay the ransom of 17 million dollars, explaining his stance with the words: “I have fourteen grandchildren. If I pay one penny today, tomorrow I’ll have fourteen kidnapped grandchildren.”

Empire magazine states: “Christopher Plummer could win every award in the world for his performance.”

The Hollywood Reporter describes the film as “a story of real life in all its extremes — wealth, human oddities, sorrow, tension, courage, willingness to commit crimes for political reasons, luck, and the power of a mother’s love… It’s also a glimpse into a refined world where money is the ultimate everything.”

The Guardian notes: “Plummer doesn’t feel like a hasty replacement — he fully enjoys the role and fits it perfectly.”

The Telegraph highlights Michelle Williams’s performance: “She’s excellent, and there’s a touch of Audrey Hepburn in her acting.”

The Daily News says: “The shared scenes between Christopher Plummer and Michelle Williams alone are worth the price of admission.”

Regnum summarizes: “Ridley Scott has created a family drama wrapped in political economy.”
