A video has appeared on the Internet in which footage from Steven Spielberg’s films has been edited, showing the director’s high skill in working with light and shadow.
To create the four-minute video, footage from the films “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”, “Empire of the Sun”, “Jurassic Park”, “Schindler’s List”, “Catch Me If You Can”, “War of the Worlds”, “The Adventures of Tintin” was used. “Bridge of Spies” and many others.
Bright lighting is a very recognizable feature of Spielberg’s films. In most of the director’s films there are scenes with extremely intense lighting. It seems to absorb space. At the same time, the rays often cut through smoke, fog or dust, creating a special, emphatically cinematic picture.
One of the typical examples of Spielberg’s approach to working with light is the scene from Close Encounters of the Third Kind in which a child opens the door of a house and encounters aliens.
The director himself calls this shot one of the best in his career, noting that it is through the intensive use of light that simultaneously “a sense of danger and hope” is created.
Expanding on the approach used in this scene, Spielberg likes to create shots with dark silhouettes against a bright source of light. This evokes a feeling of special importance of the moment, drama and mystery. The best example is another iconic shot for Spielberg’s entire work – the flyby against the backdrop of the full Moon in E.T.
The director also often uses the transition state from evening to night and from night to morning to create a dramatic and picturesque effect. In many of his paintings there are shots of the evening or morning sun.
