Over the past 20 years from 2000 to 2020, life expectancy has increased by about 6.6 years and is now 73.4 years. In 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the indicator under consideration decreased slightly – by about 2-3 years, depending on the state.
In Ukraine, the average life expectancy is 73 years. This is more than in Russia, Moldova and Kazakhstan. But still less than in most developed countries.
Life expectancy by country varies greatly and depends on many factors. Experts decided to compile a list of countries with the highest and lowest lifespan. So, the first place is occupied by Monaco with an indicator of 89.52 years. But on the last line is Afghanistan – here life expectancy is 53.65 years.

Reasons for rising life expectancy
The main reason is the development of the healthcare industry. Leading pharmaceutical companies are investing large sums of money in the development of completely new and highly effective drugs for the treatment of various diseases. This has a positive effect on the growth of life expectancy around the world.
However, it should be noted that this indicator is not the same in different countries. For example, some states are experiencing difficulties in introducing new technologies in the healthcare sector. The reasons are usually lack of financial resources, lack of opportunities, lack of qualified personnel, etc. The lack of high quality medical services in some countries leads to a decrease in life expectancy.
Life expectancy in different countries: which states are leading in the list of centenarians
Note that the United States of America did not even make it into the top ten, but got 46th place. This is due to the fact that the US authorities do not provide social health care to the population, as is usually provided in developed countries.
So, if you look at the list of countries with the longest living population, then on the first line there will be a small state – Monaco. Life expectancy here is 89.5 years, which is a lot. The success is explained by the fact that there are about 6 doctors for every 1000 people, while in Russia there are only 4.
Singapore is in second place with an indicator of 86.3 years, Macau is in third (85.9 years), etc. Israel, which is famous for its level of development of the healthcare system, received the 10th line.
Which countries have the lowest life expectancy
The anti-record in this category is set by Afghanistan with a life expectancy of 53.6 years. In second place is the Central African Republic with an indicator of 55.5 years, and in third place is the small pirate state of Somalia (55.7 years).
Such a low life expectancy is determined by the following factors:
-
- lack of access to quality medicine for the population – due to the lack of medical services, people die even from simple diseases;
-
- instability of the social and political situation;
-
- crime;
-
- low level of economic development;
-
- polluted environment.
In most cases, these reasons are interrelated. For example, an unstable political environment leads to a backlog of the economy, and this, in turn, causes a lack of access to quality medicine (no personnel, modern medical equipment, institutions, etc.).
