Carol’s voyeurism collected in one video

A clip has appeared online that combines fragments of Todd Haynes’ film “Carol,” in which the main character is being watched from afar.

“This is a film about forbidden love. To convey it, Carol’s special shooting style was used. The director shot many scenes from afar, when the main character is unaware that she is being watched. Thus, it is emphasized how anxiety and desire struggle in the girl Teresa, who spies on Carol. And the viewer himself in these episodes becomes a kind of voyeur – we spy on what we shouldn’t look at,” explains the author of the video, Jacob Swinney.

The main roles in the film were played by Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, who received an acting award at the Cannes Film Festival for this film. The film also received the Queer Palm at this film forum for its coverage of LGBT topics in cinema.

The plot takes place in New York in the 50s. Stylish mature woman Carol meets shy and young Therese, a saleswoman in a store. The first is languishing in a prosperous and boring marriage. The second one dreams of taking up photography. A fleeting glimpse of feelings between them soon develops into an all-consuming love that changes their lives.

Carol became one of the most talked about American films of last year.

We previously published a similar video essay, which collected footage from Terrence Malick’s films showing nature.
