Cossacks are figures who have always sparked admiration and fascination. Their history is steeped in legends and folklore, and cinema hasn’t overlooked these charismatic characters. The topic of Cossacks in film not only inspires adventurous storytelling but also allows reflection on historical heritage, a rethinking of the present, and even a look into the future.
The Lost Letter
Based on the story by Nikolai Gogol, the screenplay was heavily modified to create a unique narrative. After defeating the enemy, Cossack Vasyl returns to his native Dykanivka, where he learns that he must deliver a critical letter from the hetman to the Empress — failure means death. However, the devil himself is after the letter.
Maksym Osa and the Gold of the Doghead
A historical detective film based on the graphic novel by Igor Baranko, set in 1636. Maksym Osa, a cornet of the Korsun Regiment, awaits his comrades who were to bring gold from Poland. Only one returns — barely alive and empty-handed. Osa begins his own investigation, uncovers the bodies of the slain men, and is wrongly accused of the crime. Eventually cleared, he is tasked with discovering the truth and retrieving the missing gold, facing supernatural dangers along the way.
With Fire and Sword
Set in the 17th century during the uprising of the Zaporizhian Cossacks led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. While brutal battles unfold between the united Cossack-Tatar forces and the Polish army, a love story develops between nobleman Jan Skrzetuski and Helena Kurcewicz.
Road to Sich
Young Pavlo Pokhylenko works in the fields with his father while his mother prepares food. This peaceful life is disrupted by a landlord who forces them to work ten days on noble land. Pavlo’s father refuses and must flee. As Pavlo matures, he learns that his fiancée Orysia has caught the eye of both a Cossack officer and a lecherous Polish noble. He peacefully resolves one conflict but must fight the other to save his beloved. Ultimately, he joins the Cossacks heading to rescue comrades from Turkish captivity.
The Infernal Banner, or Cossack Christmas
Based on a fairytale by Sashko Lirnyk, the story follows the devil’s attempt to drag the brave Cossack Semen to hell. The devil makes a deal with the Apostle Peter: he must capture the finest Cossack by Christmas. But Semen is immune to fear, deception, and temptation.
The Hetman
Set in 1647 amid brutal conflicts between Polish nobility and Ukrainian Cossacks. The film centers on Bohdan Khmelnytsky, who leads his people toward independence while navigating diplomacy, war, and a tragic love affair with Helena — the wife of his archenemy, Pan Chaplynsky.
Hetman’s Regalia
Directed by Leonid Osyka and based on a story by Bohdan Lepky, the film takes place after Khmelnytsky’s death. His son Yurii removes Ivan Vyhovsky from power. Khmelnytsky’s daughter Olena and her allies strive to save the symbols of hetman authority — the regalia. The film addresses the crisis of leadership and the need for unity.
Bohdan-Zynoviy Khmelnytsky
A depiction of the Ukrainian people’s liberation struggle against Polish rule. The conflict is military, diplomatic, and cultural. A key event is the siege of Zbarazh, where Khmelnytsky faces a difficult choice following the betrayal of the Crimean Khan.
