Rivne is a cozy and beautiful city in western Ukraine that attracts visitors with its pleasant atmosphere, green parks, and fascinating historical locations. Here, ancient history blends harmoniously with cultural landmarks and modern leisure spaces. A walk around the city allows visitors not only to learn more about its past but also to enjoy scenic views, creative spaces, and unusual tourist attractions.
Historical Reconstruction Park “Ostvytsia Hillfort”
This is a unique historical and cultural project aimed at recreating the architectural and cultural image of an ancient Rus hillfort that once stood on the left bank of the Basiv Kut reservoir in the 11th–12th centuries. Today, the location has become a popular tourist attraction and a living platform where reenactors, craftsmen, archaeologists, and history enthusiasts gather. During the warm season, the site hosts festivals, cultural events, and workshops. Visitors can ride ancient-style boats, try traditional crafts, or take memorable photographs in a historical atmosphere.
Rivne Zoo
Rivne Zoo is considered one of the best zoos in western Ukraine. Its territory partly occupies the area of an old fruit orchard and a natural forest massif with a total area of about 4.7 hectares. Today the zoo houses more than 150 species of animals. It is a favorite place for family recreation and leisurely walks. Thanks to good animal care, offspring are born here every year among nearly thirty species. Visitors can learn more about each animal from informational stands or by booking a guided tour. The park also features many resting areas and ponds, creating a comfortable environment for visitors.
Amber Museum in Rivne
This is the only museum of its kind in Ukraine and it opened in 2010. The exhibition includes pieces of amber up to 40 million years old, jewelry, household items, and many other unique amber artifacts. One of the most remarkable exhibits is the Amber Crown of Ukraine. Particularly valuable are pieces of amber containing fossilized insects that can be tens of millions of years old.
In addition to the collection of stones and jewelry, the museum presents the history of organized amber mining in the Rivne region. The building itself is also noteworthy. It is the so-called “House of Scientists,” formerly the residence of a wealthy Jewish businessman, Perla Vigdorovych, built in 1903 in the Art Nouveau or early modern style.
Mysterious Dungeons of Rivne
The tourist and entertainment complex “Mysterious Dungeons of Rivne” combines modern technology with the historical heritage of the city. The complex consists of two parts: an above-ground area and an underground one. In the above-ground section, visitors can explore archaeological exhibitions and enjoy a light and music show. The underground area allows guests to immerse themselves in the history of Rivne. With the help of a specially created VR game based on the city’s legends, visitors can experience the atmosphere of the old town in an interactive way.
Lebedynka Park and the Alley of Forged Sculptures
This is a well-maintained green park in the center of Rivne with an artificial pond. Officially it is called Youth Park, but locals usually refer to it as “Lebedynka” because a pair of swans lives on the lake during the summer. It is one of the favorite leisure spots for residents and visitors alike. Since 2014, an alley of forged sculptures has appeared here, featuring nearly two dozen unique metal artworks. Each sculpture carries its own symbolic meaning. The alley has become a popular place for meetings, romantic walks, and photo sessions.
Rivne Regional Academic Music and Drama Theater
The theater was founded in 1939 and has since become an important cultural center of the city. Today it continues to develop actively, enriching its repertoire with new productions and attracting talented young performers. The building has two stages: a large hall with 600 seats and a smaller stage designed for about 100 spectators. The repertoire includes Ukrainian and world classics as well as plays by contemporary authors of different genres and styles.
Monument to Maria Rivnenska Nesvytska
The monument to Princess Maria Nesvytska was unveiled in 2006 on Soborna Street, the city’s main street. It was during her rule, between 1481 and 1518, that Rivne received Magdeburg rights and the official status of a city. The sculpture depicts the princess sitting in a chair and holding a handwritten scroll symbolizing the Magdeburg charter. This architectural monument is considered one of the finest in Ukraine.
Chamber and Organ Music Hall in Rivne
Organ concerts have long been an important cultural tradition in Rivne. The Chamber and Organ Music Hall of the Rivne Regional Philharmonic features a unique organ built by the Rieger-Kloss company, which allows musicians to perform a wide range of world organ classics. Renowned organists from Ukraine and Europe regularly perform here, and annual organ music festivals are held. By prior arrangement with the Philharmonic, the hall can also host wedding registration ceremonies, which become truly special when accompanied by organ music.
Pharmacy Museum in Rivne
This unusual museum displays antique pharmacy furniture and equipment. Visitors can see an old pharmaceutical laboratory, glass flasks, measuring cylinders, scales, and mortars. One of the most interesting exhibits is a cash register that is more than 100 years old. In the past it was used not only to record the sale of medicines but also to keep track of patients and even provide credit.
The museum also features a pharmacist’s chest and chair. Staff members organize workshops for visitors, and among the unusual exhibits are humorous items such as “pills for happiness” and “medicine against envy.” A figure of the pharmacy’s first director, created by masters of the Rivne Puppet Theater, is also displayed here.
Rivne Regional Museum of Local Lore
Today the Rivne Regional Museum of Local Lore serves as an important scientific, methodological, and cultural-educational center of the region. Various scientific readings, conferences, round tables, and seminars are held here throughout the year. In addition to traditional excursions and lectures, the museum introduces modern ways of engaging visitors of different age groups. These include museum celebrations, themed evenings, night tours, presentations of books and films, and meetings with well-known personalities.
Wild Ustia
For those who enjoy quiet relaxation in nature, a walking route along the Ustia River—from Naberezhna Street to Lake Basiv Kut—can be very interesting. This area is largely untouched and not specially landscaped, with no paved paths or urban infrastructure. However, this natural environment creates a unique atmosphere where visitors can hear birds singing and see dense greenery almost unaffected by human activity. The route of the children’s narrow-gauge railway also passes through this area, offering beautiful views of Rivne’s green surroundings from the train windows.
Kozak Climbing Wall
In the “Yuvileinyi” (Khimikiv) Park there is an unusual climbing wall designed in the shape of a Cossack’s head. The height of this structure exceeds 15 meters. The wall has around 36 routes of different difficulty levels, making it suitable both for beginners and experienced climbers. Those brave enough to reach the top are rewarded with access to an observation platform from which they can admire the surrounding neighborhood from above. The park also features wooden sculptures inspired by Ukrainian folk tales.
