Chernihiv is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, founded as early as the 7th century. It is a true open-air museum, where every corner breathes history and every building preserves the memory of a glorious past. The Historical Center
The historical center of Chernihiv is the oldest part of the city, also known as the Val or the Detinets. In the times of Kyivan Rus, the word detinets referred to the main fortified area of the city, where the prince, nobles, senior clergy, and warriors lived. The rest of the population resided outside the fortress, in the so-called posad. The Chernihiv Detinets was surrounded by moats, earthen ramparts, and tall wooden walls. That is why this place has long been known as the Val.
While walking along it, one cannot help but notice the 12 cast-iron cannons installed here in 1911 on the site of ancient fortifications. According to legend, these cannons were gifted to the city by Peter I in gratitude for the bravery of the Chernihiv Cossacks, who fought valiantly against the Swedes during the Northern War.
St. Catherine’s Church
St. Catherine’s Church is one of the main symbols of Chernihiv, welcoming visitors as they enter the city. It was built in honor of the heroism of the Chernihiv Cossack Regiment, who displayed courage during the siege of the Turkish fortress of Azov in 1696 under the command of acting Hetman Yakiv Lyzohub. The church was consecrated in 1715 and has since become one of the most famous examples of Ukrainian Baroque architecture. Its white walls and golden domes, visible from afar, remind visitors of the glorious history of Ukrainian Cossacks.
Regional Philharmonic (Eparchial Brotherhood)
This building is an architectural monument from the early 20th century. Today, the Chernihiv Regional Philharmonic occupies the former premises of the St. Nicholas Eparchial Brotherhood, built in 1911–1912. Interestingly, the complex includes a chapel erected in 1870 in honor of St. Alexander Nevsky. The building’s architecture is unusual for the Slavic style of that time — it combines elements of Art Nouveau and Neo-Byzantine motifs, making it a distinctive landmark of Chernihiv.
Church of Paraskeva Pyatnytsia
For more than seven centuries, this small but majestic church has adorned the central part of ancient Chernihiv. Built in the 13th century, it is one of the few pre-Mongol buildings that have survived to the present day. The church fascinates with its elegant proportions and sturdy walls that have witnessed countless historical events. It symbolizes the city’s spiritual resilience and is considered one of the architectural gems of ancient Rus.
The Mound “Chorna Mohyla” (Black Grave)
This is the most famous and mysterious burial mound in Chernihiv. According to legend, it is the burial site of the city’s founder — Prince Chornyi (“the Black”), after whom the city was named. The mound rises over 10 meters high and contains about 6,000 cubic meters of earth. It was first mentioned in chronicles in 1147. Archaeologists discovered rich warrior burials, weapons, and ornaments, indicating the ancient origin and importance of the site.
The Antoniev Caves
The Antoniev Caves are a true underground world full of mysteries. They were founded by Saint Anthony of the Caves in the 11th century. The caves consist of several levels stacked one above another and include underground churches, monastic cells, chapels, and crypts with burials. This place is simultaneously a Christian shrine, an archaeological monument, and a popular tourist attraction. Recent studies have revealed new tunnels and ancient inscriptions that were previously unknown.
Boldina Hill
Boldina Hill is one of the most picturesque spots in Chernihiv. In 1069, Saint Anthony settled here, choosing this place for prayer and spiritual devotion. The name “Boldina” comes from the Old Slavic word bold, meaning “oak.” These trees were considered sacred, and according to legend, a pagan sanctuary once stood here. Today, it is a popular tourist location with a scenic viewing platform that offers a panoramic view of the city.
Krasnyi Bridge
One of the most romantic locations in Chernihiv is the Krasnyi (Red) Bridge over the Strizhen River. The first mention of it dates back to 1783. At that time, it was the only crossing over the river, connecting the city center with an ancient trade route. The bridge got its name for its beauty and graceful design, and today it remains a favorite spot for walks and photos.
The Fire Tower
This building, erected in 1913, is one of the architectural gems of central Chernihiv. It was built for the City Volunteer Fire Society in the Neo-Gothic style. For many years, the tower served as an observation post from which firefighters watched over the city. Today, it stands as an architectural monument admired for its elegance and balanced proportions.
Sts. Boris and Gleb Cathedral
The Boris and Gleb Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in Chernihiv, built in the 12th century. It was dedicated to the holy martyrs Boris and Gleb and served as the burial place of the Davydovych princes. Inside are preserved unique frescoes and icons, and its main treasure is the silver gilded royal gates weighing about 56 kilograms, crafted by order of Hetman Ivan Mazepa.
The Hlibov Estate
Located on the outskirts of the city, the estate once impressed visitors with its appearance — a linden alley led to it, and huge stone boulders surrounded it. The mansion of nobleman Hryhorii Hlibov resembled a medieval castle and was considered one of the most original buildings in Chernihiv.
The Light and Music Fountain
The light and music fountain, opened in 2008, has become a favorite leisure spot for the residents of Chernihiv. Its bowl, made of labradorite stone, has an original design, and evening shows with colorful lights and music attract large crowds of spectators.
The Chernihiv Brewery
The history of the “Chernihivske” beer brand began in 1988, when the city was preparing to celebrate its 1300th anniversary. The beer, created at the “Desna” brewery, quickly gained popularity and became one of the symbols of the city. Today, the brewery is part of the international AB InBev corporation and offers tours with tastings of nine varieties of beer.
The Land Bank
One of the most beautiful and modern buildings of the early 20th century, the Land Bank was built between 1910 and 1913 and resembles a European castle with a tall tower and a tented roof. The combination of granite and colorful majolica tiles gives its façade a distinctive elegance. Today, it houses the V. H. Korolenko Regional Library.
The Bell Tower of the Trinity Monastery
This is the first high-rise structure in Chernihiv, built between 1771 and 1775. Its height reaches 58 meters, and from the observation platform, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city. The bell tower has five tiers and forms an integral part of the architectural ensemble of the Trinity–Elias Monastery.
The Public School
The building of the former four-grade public school was constructed in 1912 according to the design of architect Ivan Yakubovych. Its architecture represents the Ukrainian modernist style. Later, it housed the Institute of Physical Methods of Treatment, and now it serves as a polyclinic.
