The North American box office kicked into high gear this weekend. Fast & Furious 9 (F9), the tenth film in the long-running Fast & Furious franchise, topped the box office with $70 million from a pandemic-record 4,179 screens.
In the last weekend of June, it marked the highest opening of the pandemic era and breathed new life into the box office after previous strong debuts such as Godzilla vs. Kong ($31.63 million) and A Quiet Place 2 ($47.55 million). This is the highest box office since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which at the time of its release in December 2019 was $177.38 million. Sixty percent of F9’s opening weekend audience was male, 49% was 25 and over, and more than half were Hispanic and/or African American.
A key factor in this weekend’s attendance was a renewed desire among fans of the series to return to theaters, and judging by this weekend’s numbers, many of them did.
Second place went to A Quiet Place 2 with its $6.2 million and a total here of $136.39 million.
Last weekend’s No. 1 movie from Lionsgate/Millennium Media, The Killer’s Wife’s Bodyguard, fell two lines to take third place with $4.88 million in its weekend, down 57% from first. The Ryan Reynolds-Samuel L. Jackson sequel has collected $25.87 million to date.
