Effective air defense is extremely important for Ukraine, which faces the task of protecting critical infrastructure and residential facilities from missile attacks by the Russian Federation. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Western countries have provided Kiev with enormous military aid worth billions of US dollars. Large cities and strategic objects are under the invisible cover of air defense.
The Patriot
The system is extremely complex and has a range of up to 100 km (depending on the type of missile). The cost of operating the Patriot air defense system is high, since the price of one missile reaches about 3 million US dollars.
The Patriot anti-aircraft missile complex is produced by the USA and is a universal means of air defense at medium and high altitudes. Commissioning began in 1982.
NASAMS
The NASAMS anti-aircraft missile complex is the result of joint development by the Norwegian company Norwegian Kongsberg and the American Raytheon. This complex, which uses AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles, has a wide range of applications – from countering cruise missiles and drones to air attacks. Information about Canada’s intentions to purchase and transfer this complex to Ukraine indicates support and partnership.
Hawk
After the massive attack on October 10, 2022, Spain promised Ukraine additional air defense equipment, in particular, 4 launchers of the MIM-23 Hawk air defense system. These systems will be used to counter air attacks, and Ukrainian military personnel have already begun training for them in Spain.
Aspide
The air defense system was also handed over to Ukraine with the NASAMS and Aspide anti-aircraft missile systems, which have been known for their effectiveness since the 70s. Aspide is a class of missiles developed by the European company MBDA. Their high accuracy and ability to operate at a considerable distance make them an important element of the air defense system.
Stinger
Stinger is characterized by simplicity and efficiency. Their use has already been demonstrated during the attacks on Kyiv, when they successfully destroyed enemy missiles.
S-300
The S-300 anti-aircraft missile system, developed in the USSR, remains an important component of air defense. With its various modifications and the ability to work in conditions of intensive radio countermeasures, it is an effective means of countering various types of air threats.
Ukraine is actively improving its air defense capabilities, receiving military assistance from Western countries. The introduction of well-known systems, such as the Patriot, NASAMS, Hawk, Aspide, Stinger and S-300 air defense systems, is designed not only to strengthen the country’s ability to defend itself against air threats, but also to create an effective shield to protect citizens and strategic objects. The training of the Ukrainian military on these systems indicates a readiness to use them with maximum efficiency.
