Alexander Techinsky is known for his documentaries about Euromaidan “Everything is Burning” and about the Hasidic holiday of Rosh Hashan in Uman “Sirs and Senors”. Now he is working on his third directorial film “Delta” about the village of Vilkovo, which is called “Ukrainian Venice”.
The ten films listed below are like the ten commandments: each of them appeared in Techinsky’s life at the right time, giving an important hint on how to live and act further.
Apocalypse Now (1979) Francis Ford Coppola
This is my favorite movie. It’s about everything in the world.
“My friend Ivan Lapshin” (1984) Alexey German
My favorite Soviet film. I like it because it is more like real life and not like a movie.
“Come and See” (1985) Elem Klimov
The first time I watched it was when I was a child, when the movie was released. And the second time was a few months ago. This is a film that cannot fail to influence a person.
“Seven Samurai” (1954) Akira Kurosawa
Another picture from childhood. This is something so big that it stuck in my head and stayed in my head for the rest of my life.
“Gangster” (2007) Ridley Scott
I happened to watch this film at a turning point for myself. And she gave me a lot of support. The question was simple: either bend under the system, or choose your own path. And after watching this film, everything became clear.

The Thin Red Line (1998) Terrence Malick
Silence is the best thing that can be said about this film.
“A Serious Man” (2009) Ethan and Joel Coen
This film shows that life is a very ironic thing.

“Casino” (1995) Martin Scorsese
The movie is about how, having everything, you can screw it all up very beautifully.
“The Great Beauty” (2013) Paolo Sorrentino
When we finished filming “Everything Is Burning”, I just went to see “The Great Beauty” and when I left the hall, I had a very clear vision of how to edit my film. These two ribbons do not intersect in any way. And I have no idea how this Italian film could have influenced the editing of Everything Is Burning. Let’s call it “magic”…

“Death of a Worker” (2005) Michael Glawogger
When I was about to leave photojournalism, I had no idea what I would do. Then Dima Stoikov showed me this film. And after watching it, I didn’t have the slightest doubt that in the future I should devote myself to documentary films.
