On July 22 at the Odesa Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre took place the grand closing ceremony of the 8th OIFF. The main prize \u2013 the Grand Prix \u2013 based on the results of the audience vote was awarded to the film \u201cKing of the Belgians\u201d by Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth. Director Roman Bondarchuk became the recepient of the Golden Duke\u2019 for the film \u201cDixie Land\u201d in the nomination \u201cBest Feature Film\u201d. \u201cThe Leading Role\u201d by Serhiy Bukovsky became the best documentary. Isabelle Huppert<\/a> and Agnieszka Holland received awards for their contribution to cinema.<\/p>\n

The closing ceremony began with the performance of the Ukrainian ballet troupe D’Arts Dance Project, after which the hosts Yanina Sokolova and Oleh Paniuta invited to the stage Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Rosenko, the Head of the Ukrainian State Film Agency Pylyp Illenko. The Minister of Culture of Ukraine Yevhen Nyshchuk presented actress Lia Akhedzhakova <\/strong>with a symbolic gift \u2013 a painting of her together with actor Bogdan Stupka. Today was a 5-year anniversary of the death of the great Ukrainian. \u201cWe were partners on the stage, did plays together. A partner is more than just a friend. A partner is someone special,\u201d<\/em> said Lia Akhedzhakova.<\/p>\n

The winner of the European Documentary Competition was announced first. It became the film \u201cThe Leading Role\u201d<\/strong> by Sergey Bukovsky<\/strong>, which was presented in two competition programmes simultaneously. The award was received by Serhiy Bukovsky and his mother, actress Nina Antonova. \u201cMy mother said, \u201cDo not shoot me \u2013 I’m too small, no one will see me. Mom is small, but very strong. And you have to try very hard to spoil her character. I hope that I have not spoiled it,\u201d <\/em>said Serhiy Bukovsky. The award was presented by Roman Bondarchuk and Marianna Kaat.<\/p>\n

The FIPRESCI prize was awarded to a Ukrainian short film \u201cLilac\u201d by Kateryna Gornostai<\/strong>. Also, the FIPRESCI jury recognized the film \u201cBlack Level\u201d<\/strong> by Valentin Vasyanovych<\/strong> as the best Ukrainian feature film. Actress Kateryna Molchanova starred in both winning films.<\/p>\n

The jury of the National Competition named Pavlo Ostrikov\u2019s \u201cGraduation ’97\u201d<\/strong> the best Ukrainian short film. Nina Antonova<\/strong> was awarded the Best Actor award for the film \u201cThe Leading Role\u201d. <\/strong>The winner of the Golden Duke became the film \u201cDixie Land\u201d<\/strong> by Roman Bondarchuk (Ukraine, Latvia, Germany). \u201cThis film took 7 years to make, 7 years of our life,\u201d <\/em>said Roman Bondarchuk. The film \u201cThe Strayed\u201d by Arkadii Nepytaliuk<\/strong> got a special mention from the Jury of the National Competition, as did \u201cLilac\u201d by Kateryna Gornostai<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The International Jury, led by Christian Petzold, issued a special mention for presenting a mixture of fiction and reality from to the film by Jun Geng \u201cFree and Easy\u201d<\/strong> (China). The ensemble of actors from the Georgian film \u201cMy Happy Family\u201d<\/strong> (Georgia, Germany) by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross won in the nomination \u201cBest Acting Work\u201d. Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross<\/strong> also became the best directors of the International Competition Programme. The best film of the International Competition, according to the jury, became \u201cSummer 1993\u201d (Spain) by Carla Simon<\/strong>. This is a film about 6-year-old Frida, who, after the death of her parents, moves from Barcelona to live with her uncle\u2019s family. \u201cAll week we had arguments and discussions, but the main award was discussed for about 10 minutes. \u201cSummer 1993\u201d is a very personal film about personal experiences from childhood. And its narration is very balanced. This is the power of cinema \u2013 you take what has happened a long time ago, and experience it anew,\u201d<\/em> noted the Head of the Jury Christian Petzold.<\/p>\n

The audience, though, gave preference to the film \u201cKing of the Belgians\u201d (Belgium, the Netherlands, Bulgaria) by Peter Brosens and Jesse Woodworth<\/strong> \u2013 the film received the Grand Prix of the 8th Odesa Film Festival. Producer of the film Mira Staleva<\/strong>: \u201cI want to thank the Odesa audience and say that I saw how this festival started and developed, and how it is becoming more and more powerful. In the second year of the festival, I came to Odesa to pick up the award for another Bulgarian film, on which I did not work, and now I stand here, receiving the Grand Prix for my own film\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

The great Polish director, screenwriter, three-time Oscar nominee Agnieszka Holland<\/strong> was awarded for her contribution to cinema: \u201cUkraine has its own cinematic voice. You do have stories to tell.\u201d <\/em>The award was presented by actress Larisa Kadochnikova. Also, French actress Isabelle Huppert <\/strong>received the Golden Duke for her contribution to cinema from the hands of the OIFF president Viktoriya Tigipko. \u201cI have a special relationship to your country. Several years ago, I was in the film \u201cThe Flood\u201d directed by Igor Minaiev<\/em> (Press service:<\/strong> Minaiev worked at the Odessa film studio), so I wanted to come here,\u201d<\/em> said Isabelle Huppert.
