Today the first trailer for the film “Crocodile Gennady” (“Almost a Saint”), co-produced by Terrence Malick, appeared. The film was directed by Steve Hoover.
The film tells the story of the Mariupol priest Gennady Mokhnenko, who, of his own free will, patrols the streets and forcibly takes homeless children to a special center, which he himself organized. This institution became the largest rehabilitation organization in the territory of the former USSR. After this, Gennady became a hero for some, while others began to harshly criticize him.
The film was filmed in co-production with Ukraine. It premiered last month at the Docudays Film Festival.
This is the second full-length documentary film in Steve Hoover’s career. His previous work, Blood Brother, won two prizes at the Sundance Film Festival. “Crocodile Gennady” also collected a number of awards at film forums in different countries.
One of the executive producers of the film was Terrence Malick, who triumphed at Cannes with The Tree of Life and at the Berlinale with The Thin Red Line.
