After a record domestic box office opening during the pandemic with $48.1 million in five days, Godzilla vs. Kong (Godzilla vs. Kong), a picture from Warner Bros. collected $13.38 million from 3,084 screens in its second weekend. Adding those grosses to the film’s opening, Godzilla vs. Kong became the highest-grossing (not literally) wide box office during the pandemic with $69.5 million in just 12 days, surpassing Tenet’s (58, $5 million), The Croods: Housewarming ($56.5 million), Wonder Woman: 1984 ($46.2 million) and Tom and Jerry ($41.1 million). The best Godzilla and Kong “broke the box office” in the newly opened for trips to the cinema Los Angeles, as well as in New York, Dallas, Chicago, Phoenix, Houston, San Francisco, Atlanta, Salt Lake City and Minneapolis.
Nobody , the Universal film directed by Russian director Ilya Naishuller, held on to second place in its third weekend with $2.65 million, down just 11% from last weekend. This is a good result for an action film starring the popular Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad) considering that the box office dropped by 56% between the first and second weekends. To date, the film has collected $15.63 million in North America (USA and Canada combined).
Third place went to Sony and Screen Gems’ religious horror The Unholy, which collected $2.4 million in its second weekend. This is 24% less than last weekend. Total revenue so far is $6.73 million. The cartoon Rayyan and the last dragon took fourth place with the collection
in $ 2.14 million, which is 5% more than last weekend. After six weeks at the box office, the animation from the Disney studio collected $35.24 million in North America.
The only new film in wide (not so) box office this past weekend was Lionsgate’s Voyagers. It clearly failed to impress the intended young audience, grossing only $1.35 million from 1,972 screens, and finished in fifth place.
Abroad, things were more fun. Godzilla vs. Kong has crossed the $350 million mark worldwide after taking in about $24.1 million outside of North America last weekend, including $12.9 million in China. In this country alone, an incredible 165.4 million dollars were earned for North America, but not for China. The two monsters raked in $288.3 million outside of North America and $357.8 million globally in a total of 39 countries, including the US and Canada. Large-format IMAX theaters brought in $24.1 million of the total, or 9% of the box office total. Nobody grossed $2.37 million in 12 countries, including a $600,000 opening in South Korea. The total collection abroad is $13.16 million, and including the US and Canada – $28.78 million. Very good for the current “pandemic” times for a film with a very modest production budget of 16 million dollars by Hollywood standards.
