Recipe for the romantic dish Gnocchi from The Godfather

The ritual of the meal in Cosa Nostra was the most important part of family life. Where did the huge mafia family gather? Where were all the celebrations held? Where were the secret business negotiations taking place? Of course, at the table.

Revisiting the Godfather trilogy by Francis Ford Coppola, we can once again be convinced of the peculiarities of Sicilian traditions.

In the last part of the trilogy, Don Corleone wants to legitimize his empire and find an heir who would continue his work. Vincent (Andy Garcia), the son of Don Sunny, sees himself perfectly as the heir to the family business, but he is in love with Mary (Sofia Coppola), the only daughter of Michael Corleone. Both know that their love is doomed, but they cannot live without each other. The lovers meet in secret, and during one such meeting Vincent prepares delicious gnocchi for his young beloved.

Gnocchi with cheese

For the choux pastry:

  • 2 chicken eggs
  • A pinch of grated nutmeg
  • 45 g butter
  • 60 g sifted wheat flour
  • 1.5 liters of water
  • Salt pepper

Gnocchi:

  • 200 g choux pastry
  • 200 g grated Swiss cheese (eg Parmesan)
  • 25 g butter
  • Half a kilo of crumbly potatoes
  • Salt pepper

Prepare the choux pastry as usual. Boil water and add salt, pepper and nutmeg. Melt the butter in water and add flour. Stir the dough and remove from heat after a few minutes. Add eggs to the cooled dough one by one.

Peel the potatoes and boil them. Boiled potatoes need to be mashed and dried. Then mix with the dough and add 100 g of grated cheese, salt and pepper. Roll out the resulting dough into ropes with a diameter of 2 cm and cut them into pieces. You will have gnocchi. Cook them for 15-20 minutes in a deep saucepan. Make sure the water doesn’t boil. When the gnocchi has doubled in size, remove them.

Bake the finished gnocchi until golden brown on the grill at 200°C. Grease the pan with butter and sprinkle cheese on top.

Serve hot with salad or chops.
