Despite the fact that the idea for the film arose 3 years ago, the start of work on the film came only when a request appeared – the director received a grant from the Ukrainian Cultural Fund. Today, the team is looking for partners to implement the project of the full-length film “Retention”. Especially for the __ edition, the director shared the details of the creation of the script for the new feature film.
About the genre
“I set a goal to make the science fiction genre a background, to look at it from a different angle. First of all, I work on the desire of the characters to say everything that they want to talk to their parents. This is the conditional backbone of my story. And, of course, the priority is to highlight those fragments of relations between generations.
This film is aimed at becoming an exclusively international film production, finding European partners, getting a good sales agent and thereby reaching a wide audience not only in Ukraine, but also abroad.”
About the idea and request
“I started working on this project back in 2018, it was at the level of one page of treatment and one page of script and directorial developments. For some time I was looking for a good moment to announce this idea… After an active phase of work on Pamfir (ed. – Dmytro’s debut feature film), I decided not to waste time and already have the script for my second feature film under development.”
About the name
“Retention” is a primary memory that keeps the past in the present. The topic of memory keeps coming back to me, and I am interested in talking about it, thinking about it, writing it down, asking questions that will be interesting to find the answer to after watching the film.”

The professional debut short film “The Weightlifter” won the Grand Prix of the Warsaw International Festival and qualified for the Oscar. The Short Film Festival in Drama (Greece) has chosen The Weightlifter as a candidate for the European Film Award (EFA) in the Best Short Film category.
Dmytro Suholytkyi-Sobchuk is a participant of the prestigious international scriptwriting workshops TorinoFilmLab (Script&Pitch) and MIDPOINT Intensive with the script of the debut feature film “Pamfir”. The feature film project “Pamphyr” was selected for Cinéfondation — The Résidence 2019. (residence of the Cannes International Film Festival).
