Film awards record holders: Oscar

The film’s victory at one prestigious film forum makes it stand out among the thousands of films that come into the world every year. If a film wins several prestigious awards, such as the Oscar, it automatically receives a place in the history of cinema.

After delving into the annals of the American Film Academy, we selected those films and those filmmakers who collected an abnormal number of Oscars.

Walt Disney set the absolute record for the number of Academy Awards received. There are 26 such awards in his collection. Considering that each gold-plated bobblehead weighs 3.85 kg, their total weight is 100.1 kg.

He received his first Academy Award in 1932 for a cartoon about the adventures of Mickey Mouse.

If you ignore Disney’s extraordinary achievement, four Oscars would be the record for a director. That’s how much John Ford, Ingmar Bergman and Federico Fellini collected.

The most Oscar-winning films were Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic (1997) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). Each of them received 11 statuettes.

But if “The Lord of the Rings…” received all the awards for which it was nominated, then “Ben-Hur” and “Titanic” could win even more such prizes.

However, none of these three won the top five Oscars: for best picture, director, screenplay, and male and female roles.

To date, history knows only three films that managed to win all three of these key statuettes: It Happened One Night (1934), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991).

The leaders among Oscar-winning actors are Jack Nicholson and Daniel Day-Lewis, who each have three “cherished statuettes.” The first received these awards for the films “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1977), “Terms of Endearment” (1984) and “As Good as It Gets” (1998).

By the way, Jack Nicholson was also among the record holders for the number of Golden Globes received. However, in contrast to the Academy Award, he has six.

Unlike Nicholson, Daniel Day-Lewis won all his Oscars for leading roles. He received awards for the films “My Left Foot” (1990), “Oil” (2008), and “Lincoln” (2013).

Among actresses, Katharine Hepburn received the most statuettes – four Oscars for Early Glory (1934), Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1968), The Lion in Winter (1969) and On Golden Pond (1982) .

Well, the greatest number of attempts to receive this award was from Meryl Streep, who was nominated for an Oscar 18 times. However, she was awarded it only three times.
