In 2020, the film by the classic of world cinema Woody Allen was released – “The Rifkin Festival”, which contains the author’s signature barbs and remarks conveyed to his main character – the director’s next alter ego. This time Allen’s hero is Mort Rifkin (Wallace Shawn), a former film professor and now a writer who still can’t finish his first book. In general, with the hero there is Allen’s humor and knowledge of classic cinema, but a completely different performance.
In the Rifkin Festival plot, Mort follows his wife Sue (Gina Gershon) to the San Sebastian Film Festival, not only to enjoy new releases and retrospectives, but also to keep an eye on his wife, who works as a press agent for the young popular director Philip. (Louis Garrel) and seems to be seriously attracted to her ward. Mort finds Philip’s work pretentious and superficial, which he does not forget to report on every possible occasion. The situation is aggravated by the protagonist’s acquaintance with the charming Jo (Elena Anaya), a local doctor and a keen connoisseur of beauty, who, however, is also married to an explosive artist.
Woody Allen in “The Rifkin Festival” wittily quotes classic cinema, laughs at Jewish stereotypes, enjoys the beauty of September Spain and again introduces Death himself as one of the characters, of course, performed by a two-time Oscar winner. Who exactly – you will be able to find out starting December 31 in cinemas. In the meantime, we decided to remember our favorite Woody Allen apt lines from his works.
