Rental company AMC Theaters will begin opening theaters in Los Angeles with the March 15 opening of its AMC Burbank 16 and AMC Century City 15 multiplexes. All other theaters in Los Angeles County are allowed to open beginning March 19, but with 25 percent occupancy at maximum in 100 people per hall.
After two weekends of promising collections at the North American box office, including the $8.5 million debuts of Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon and Warner Bros’ Tom and Jerry hybrid . ($14.1 million), the North American box office has started to slow down as the major studios continue to hold back potential blockbusters and have almost nothing to show at the box office. And part of the potential viewers have already seen the released or already released films on streaming platforms…
So the top five didn’t change from last weekend, and the cartoon Paradise again took first place with $5.5 million from 2,163 screens, which is 35% less than last weekend. The film, which was also available to Disney+ streaming subscribers for $30, grossed $15.84 million in its first ten days in theaters.
Tom and Jerry from Warner Bros. took second place again in its third weekend with $4.1 million (down 38% from last weekend), for a domestic total of $28.2 million to date.
Lionsgate’s Chaos Walking held steady in third place with $2.25 million from 1,995 screens, down 40% from last weekend. The collection of the film according to the results of the first ten days is a modest 6.9 million dollars.
In fourth place is Boogie from Focus Features with $730,000 from 1,272 screens, down 39% from last weekend. The total collection for this sports drama is currently $2.28 million.
Rounding out the top five (I sigh after this word) is The Croods: A New Age, which collected about $520,000 in its 15th weekend. The total collection of the Universal/Dreamworks Animation cartoon sequel is $54.3 million in North America.
And what about across the seas? After Disney/Fox’s Avatar closed the weekend with a fairly substantial $20.5 million in its Chinese re-release, it reclaimed the global crown of the highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing current record-holder Avengers: Endgame . Thirty percent of this collection went to the huge IMAX screens, although they represent only 1% of the total number of screens in China. But Tom and Jerry collected $2.6 million in 37 countries, bringing its overseas total outside of North America to $38.7 million and its worldwide total to $66.9 million.
