Amazing Photos of Underwater Microorganisms

Aniek Stevense is a Dutch underwater photographer known for her stunning macro shots of the tiniest ocean creatures. Her work focuses on creating vivid portraits of marine life that most divers never even notice. She especially loves photographing nudibranchs — bright, fantastically colored creatures that look as if they’ve come from another planet.

Stevense admits that photography, for her, is a blend of technical precision and artistic vision. She spends hours searching for a single tiny subject, patiently waiting for the creature to move into the perfect position or for the light to fall just right. Her favorite moments are when a marine animal — a shrimp or a snail — seems to “pose” for the camera.

She often experiments with light and shadow, using flashes, a snoot (focused light), and super macro lenses to create a stage-like effect underwater. Her style is easily recognizable — a dark, dramatic background with a glowing creature at the center, floating in its own miniature world.

Aniek says she feels the greatest joy when she manages to capture the “character” of a creature, evoking a sense of wonder and admiration in the viewer. She believes such photos help people see the ocean as a living, fragile ecosystem worth protecting.

Among the marine creatures Aniek Stevense photographs:

  • nudibranchs
  • tiny sea snails, including the “Shaun the Sheep” species
  • Hobbit shrimp
  • hairy octopuses
  • transparent sea shrimp
  • small crabs and goby fish
  • marine worms and coral-dwelling larvae
