Saint Ambrose, also known as Ambrose of Milan, was a prominent spiritual leader and bishop of Milan in the 4th century. His life and work had a significant influence on the Christian church and the events of his time.
Saint Ambrose was born around 340 in Trier (modern Germany) into a noble family. His father was praetorian prefect of Gaul. After the death of his father, Ambrose was provided with education and upbringing in Rome from infancy. Subsequently, he himself became a famous lawyer and acquired a high position as a civil servant.
Fate brought Ambrose to Milan, where, despite the fact that he was not yet baptized, he was elected bishop of this city in 374. This choice was unique, since Ambrose was a secular official and a pagan. Accepting his new spiritual calling, he was baptized and soon ordained as a bishop.
Saint Ambrose proved himself to be a talented preacher and a great defender of Orthodoxy. He actively opposed the spread of Arianism, a doctrine that denied the divine origin of Christ. Thanks to his oratorical abilities and influence, he was able to convert many famous personalities to Christianity, including later St. Augustine.
St. Ambrose also made significant contributions to the theology and ritual of the church. He wrote many treatises on theological topics and became one of the founders of Western Christian theology. His influence even extended beyond ecclesiastical matters—his words and deeds influenced the political and social environment of his time.
Saint Ambrose passed away on April 4, 397. His holiness was recognized by the church, and his memory is celebrated on December 7 (December 25, new style). His works, including works on theology and church law, continue to be an important source for Christian thought.
