December 28 according to the new style: Orthodox holiday, birthday people, folk signs

On December 28, according to the new calendar, the memory of the 20,000 martyrs burned in the church in Nicomedia, as well as the apostle of the 70 Nicanor, is honored.

20,000 holy martyrs in Nicomedia, burned in the church, and others who suffered for Christ, including Glycerius, Zeno, Theophilus, Dorotheus, Mardonius, Mygdonia, Indis, Gorgonia, Petra, Euphemia, Secunda, Nicostratus, Agathia, Domna, Theophilus, Antony and many others, became holy sufferers in Nicomedia under the pagan emperor Diocletian in 302.

During the celebration of the Nativity of Christ in 302, the wicked emperor demanded that 20 thousand Christians gathered in the Nicomedia Cathedral Church leave the temple and sacrifice to idols. The emperor threatened to burn the temple with the people inside. But everyone refused to renounce Christ, even those who had not yet been baptized accepted Baptism, and the entire temple was engulfed in martyrdom flames. All 20 thousand Christians received martyr’s crowns.

Apostle Nicanor of the 70s was one of the first deacons of the New Testament Church, chosen by the disciples of Christ in Jerusalem. Becoming the first Christian martyr, he suffered from the pagans around 34 AD. This information is found in the book of Acts of the Apostles in the Holy Scriptures.
