From Venus de Milo to Kardashian: how beauty standards have changed

Director Anna Ginzburg made an animated short film “What is beauty?”

Previously, she released the film “Private Parts,” based on documentary interviews. She is dedicated to sexuality directly. Various animators drew genitals—young and old, male and female, shy and sassy—talking in human voices about vaginas, masturbation, and similar topics.

In the new film, the director talks about how the perception of appearance has changed over the centuries. According to her, the only thing that remains unchanged is the pressure on women to conform to body ideals.

“My little sister has anorexia,” Ginsburg told It’s Nice That, “and she was hospitalized and tube-fed. She has been ill since she was 12 and is now 20. Her suffering over the past eight years has made me think about Western ideals of beauty and the increasing objectification of women in our culture.”

With this in mind, Anna decided to create a film that would remind every woman that her body was perfect at some point in history.

For the video, she used a palette of blue and its shades: “Blue was originally associated with femininity through ancient art and iconography, and only relatively recently became a ‘masculine’ color.”
